Time Passes

Every year around this time, there’s a shift that’s hard to explain unless you’re in it.

The calendar starts to fill in a way that doesn’t feel fully in your control. School events, end-of-year commitments, things for your kids that matter and things that just… exist and still require your presence. At the same time, your business doesn’t slow down. If anything, it expects the same pace, the same attention, the same output it always does.

And somewhere in the middle of that, you start to feel like you’re falling a step behind.

It’s not just that you’re busier. It’s that your capacity quietly changes, and most of us don’t acknowledge it.

You’re still holding the same expectations for yourself—how you show up at work, how you manage your time, how responsive you are, how much you can carry—but the conditions around you are different. There’s less structure, more emotional energy being pulled in different directions, and more moments in your day that aren’t yours to control.

And instead of adjusting for that, we tend to push through it. We try to keep everything moving at the same speed, as if nothing has changed, and then we wonder why it feels heavier.

I’ve noticed this in myself too. There’s a version of me that wants to keep operating exactly the same way, to keep everything consistent, to not let anything slip. But there’s another part that knows this season isn’t meant to be run that way.

Not every season is designed for maximum output.

Some require a different kind of awareness.

This time of year has made me think less about how to fit everything in and more about what actually needs to stay intact. What are the things that matter enough to protect, even when everything feels compressed? And just as importantly, what can be simplified without everything unraveling?

Because the truth is, something always gives. The question is whether you’re choosing it or letting it happen.

I think this is where a lot of unnecessary pressure comes from. Not from everything we have to do, but from expecting ourselves to do it all in the same way we would at a completely different time of year.

There’s nothing wrong with you if this feels harder right now. It’s supposed to feel different. Your life is different for this moment.

And maybe the goal isn’t to power through it perfectly, but to move through it a little more honestly. To recognize what’s changed, to adjust where you can, and to give yourself a little more space in a season that doesn’t offer much of it.

Time passes. It always does.

But the way you experience it is shaped by whether you keep holding yourself to an expectation that no longer fits.
